Who We Are:
Westie Rescue of Austin is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization that is dedicated to saving the lives of homeless and abandoned West Highland Terriers (Westies), Cairn Terriers, Scottish Terriers (Scotties), and frequent mixes of Cairns and other Terriers.
We can always find you the perfect pet, if not with our foster network, then with some other rescue program. The dogs that come into our rescue program come to us from various means. Some are strays, some have been abandoned or left at shelters by owners who no longer can care for them due to circumstances such as moving, illness in family, new child, divorce, etc.
Terriers are not the breed for everyone, no matter how cute or popular they seem to be. They demand a lot of attention, for care and grooming, should be indoor dogs and not left outside. Terriers like to chase small game such as squirrels or rabbits or cats, and will not heed commands when on a chase. They may also like to dig, and will rearrange a garden or flower bed, or escape from under a fence. Terriers are very independent minded, and do not tolerate being mauled by young children. Therefore we do not recommend adopting a terrier into a family with children less than 8 or 10 years of age.
Westie Rescue of Austin was the honored recipient of a Pedigree Adoption Drive Foundation grant from the Pedigree Foundation program. The grant will be used to continue providing necessary veterinary care, food and support for our rescued animals while in our fostering program. We update vaccinations, implant microchips, spay or neuter each dog, and test for heartworm disease, before an adoption take place.

There are many folks that are very concerned with the increasing numbers of homeless and abandoned pets in the shelter and rescue facilities. Many of these folks have already opened their home and their heart to one, or more, of these precious companions. However, there are still many more folks that don't have the ability to bring a pet into their home, or volunteer to help. Good News !!! YOU can still make a difference!

We have many available Westies, Cairns, and Terrier Mixes, and even a few Non-Terriers, available for adoption. Please visit our Available Companion page to check them out.
All of our rescued dogs are kept in private foster homes of volunteers who take care of them as their own until they find their forever home. They are available to meet by appointment only. Our adoption process includes an adoption application, a home visit, references checked, a donation fee and follow-up visits after adoption to insure that the terrier is in the right home with the right family.

It is the policy of the Westie Rescue Austin to find placements for any dog that still has a good quality of life, even when they are over 10 years old. Consider the possibility of being a retirement home for an older terrier like these. They are wonderful companions and so much less demanding than younger animals. A senior citizen will happily sleep away the day while you are at work and be happy to see you when you come home. They love to take walks but don't need nearly the amount of exercise as the young ones. Many of them have had hard lives and are so grateful for a warm bed, good food, and a little kindness. Nothing feels quite as good as knowing that you have made a senior dog's last days peaceful and happy ones. Whether it is for a few months or a few years, our seniors provide a special joy to the people who love them.
